Hima is the hotel's cryotherapy room. A whole-body LN2 chamber operating at –140°C, two-to-three-minute sessions delivered by a trained operator every session. Named after Sanskrit hima — snow, cold, frost — because that is what the room does: a specific dose of extreme cold, taken as a scheduled recovery session rather than a stand-alone amenity. Located on the lower ground floor of the hotel alongside Aruna and Ninada. A brief extreme-cold exposure, at the spec the trial literature uses.
Whole-body cryotherapy is a brief exposure — typically two to three minutes — to extreme cold, delivered in a chamber operating at –110°C to –140°C. The specification matters. The bulk of the published trial evidence uses clinical-grade LN2 chambers at –140°C; electric cryo chambers (typically –80°C to –110°C) do not produce the same physiological response, and partial-body chambers that cool only the body from the neck down are further away from the evidence base again. Hima uses a refurbished clinical-grade LN2 chamber at –140°C — the spec the trial literature uses, and the reason the room can honestly claim the effects the trials support.
Operationally, a session is quick. The guest changes into protective gloves, socks, and underwear, enters the chamber for two to three minutes with a trained operator monitoring throughout, and exits. Total contact time in the chamber is short; total time in the room including changing and briefing is about ten minutes. The chamber's throughput is generous — 30+ sessions per day per chamber is easily achievable — so scheduling is not the bottleneck.
Four indications where the trials are populated enough to lead on.
The cryotherapy literature is now large, with multiple RCTs and meta-analyses across a range of endpoints. What follows is the small set where the evidence is sufficient to make specific claims to guests — ordered roughly from strongest to emerging.
Post-exercise muscle soreness and recovery
The strongest and most consistently replicated finding across the whole-body cryotherapy literature. Meta-analyses show meaningful reductions in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in the twenty-four to seventy-two hours following strenuous training, improvements in subjective recovery scores, and small but consistent improvements in perceived readiness for the next training session. Effect is most reliable when the cryo session is scheduled within an hour of the training session. This is the primary evidence-based reason Hima sits close to Bala Gym in the building.
Short-term inflammation reduction
Measurable acute decreases in C-reactive protein and several inflammatory cytokines have been reported across multiple trials. The effect is real but short-lived — hours-to-days rather than sustained — so the value comes from consistent repeated exposure rather than single-session dose. Longitudinal studies of committed cryo users (three-plus sessions per week over months) show more sustained inflammatory-marker reductions, though the sample sizes are smaller and the confounders larger.
Mood and depressive symptoms
Some evidence for modest improvements in depressive symptoms in patients with mild-to-moderate depression, with the effect thought to run through catecholamine release and vagal-tone effects. Effect size smaller than the sports-recovery literature but statistically meaningful in the trials that exist. Not a treatment for depression — guests with clinical presentations are directed to Manas — but a useful adjunct for the general mood-and-energy dimension.
Sleep-quality improvements in some populations
Emerging but reasonable evidence for improved subjective sleep quality with consistent cryo use, particularly in athletic populations. The mechanism is not fully characterised — some combination of parasympathetic upregulation and inflammatory-load reduction is the current best explanation. Worth flagging as a secondary benefit; not the reason to book a cryo session in isolation.
Consistent frequency, right timing, protective spec — this is a daily-protocol modality.
Cryotherapy is not a single-session intervention. The value compounds with sustained use. A guest who takes one session on their Long Weekend will feel the acute effect and will not see the deeper benefits the trials describe. The Cryo Add-on membership is structured around this reality: a member using the chamber consistently over months builds up the physiological adaptation the evidence base actually describes.
Session length: two to three minutes
The trial literature uses two-to-three-minute sessions almost universally. Below two minutes the tissue does not reach the cold threshold that produces the physiological response. Above three minutes the marginal benefit disappears and cold-injury risk climbs. Every Hima session is timed and monitored to the two-to-three-minute window; the operator manages the timer and ends the session at the appropriate mark rather than leaving it to the guest.
Frequency: two-to-three sessions per week for a disciplined user; up to daily for the compounding effect
The strongest trial evidence uses two-to-three sessions per week, which is also what a typical disciplined recovery user builds into their weekly routine. Very heavy use (daily or near-daily) is where the sleep and mood benefits become more visible in the trials, though the marginal return per additional session decreases. The Cryo Add-on membership caps use at three sessions per week (156 sessions per year); this is generous enough for a disciplined user and structured enough that a very-heavy user is not consuming the membership without contributing.
Timing: post-training for the recovery benefit; morning for the general parasympathetic effect
For the muscle-recovery use case, the evidence supports sessions within an hour of the training session — the sooner the better. Hima's location on the lower ground floor puts it a few minutes' walk from Bala; a guest coming out of a training session can be in the chamber within twenty minutes. For the general recovery / mood / sleep use case, morning sessions are a common pattern because they produce a small alertness lift that persists into the day; evening sessions can interfere with sleep for some guests and are not the recommended default.
Contraindications and clinical clearance
Contraindications are non-trivial. Uncontrolled hypertension, recent cardiovascular events (MI, stroke, DVT), cold urticaria, Raynaud's disease, severe cold intolerance, pregnancy, uncontrolled arrhythmias, and open wounds all preclude cryo use. Screening is done as part of the standard programme intake or the Cryo Add-on onboarding — the guest is not allowed into the chamber without clinical clearance. Dr Chande signs off the clearance list; the trained operator refuses entry to any guest without it.
Protective spec: gloves, socks, underwear, dry skin
The tissue-injury risk in a properly-run cryo session is low but non-zero. Protective gloves and socks are worn to prevent frostbite on the extremities; the rest of the body is exposed but must be dry (moisture on the skin can cause localised freeze injury). Metallic jewellery is removed. The trained operator briefs each guest before their first session and re-briefs at any subsequent session if the guest is new to the chamber.
The wellness market runs well ahead of the evidence on cryotherapy.
Whole-body cryotherapy has picked up a substantial wellness-market retail line with claims that outrun the trials by a wide margin. Hima is scoped to what the evidence actually supports; the following claims are common in the wider industry and are specifically not made here.
- Not a longevity extender. The trial evidence does not support cryotherapy as a lifespan-extending intervention. Healthspan-supporting via recovery and inflammation reduction, yes. Longevity claim in its own right, no.
- Not a fat-loss modality. The energy expenditure of a two-to-three-minute cold exposure is trivial in the context of a weight-management plan. The wellness-market claim that cryo "burns 500 calories per session" is not supported.
- Not an immune-system upgrade. Some inflammatory markers move; the systemic "immune boost" framing is a stretch beyond what the trials show.
- Not a metabolic reset. The metabolic changes are transient and modest; the wellness-market framing overstates them.
- Not marketed as a spa amenity. Hima is scheduled around Bala training and programme recovery days, not offered as a decorative feature. Guests who book it are treating it as a recovery intervention, and the room is staffed and operated to that spec.

The layered membership product for Jersey residents.
Cryo Add-on is the local membership product on top of Hima. Structured as two options: a bolt-on for existing Long Club members at £150/month, or a standalone product for cryo-only customers at £180/month. Both cover up to three sessions per week (156 sessions per year). Drop-in single sessions are available at £40 per session for non-members.
Bolt-on at £150/month (£1,800/year)
The priority sell — layered on top of an existing Long Club Standard or Plus membership. The bolt-on price assumes the member already sits inside the clinical architecture (physician contact, DEXA, wearable-data review, member concierge) and is adding cryo as a daily-protocol modality. Deepens the relationship and creates a high-frequency touchpoint between the proposition and its local base.
Standalone at £180/month (£2,160/year)
For the Jersey resident who wants regular cryo without (yet) committing to the wider clinical tier. The £30/month differential over the bolt-on is small enough that the product is accessible, large enough that a member has a structural incentive to upgrade into the full clinical proposition over time. The path from cryo-only to Long Club Standard is short by design.
Drop-in at £40/session
Single-session access for non-members. Priced at the lower end of the UK retail range (typically £30–60) to make sampling accessible before committing to a monthly membership. Captures the hotel guest staying outside the residential programmes, the occasional user, and the Healthhaus member trying the chamber before deciding.
Three-sessions-per-week cap and why it matters
The weekly cap protects margin against unbounded use. Very-heavy use (daily or near-daily) is where the marginal cost of LN2 supply starts to compress the membership economics. At the modelled 100 sessions per year for a typical disciplined member, the bolt-on produces roughly £1,270 contribution at 71% margin; the standalone produces roughly £1,600 at 74%. At the cap, worst-case margin drops to 55–60% — still healthy. The cap is generous enough that disciplined members never feel constrained.
How this lands in the Year 5 numbers. Steady-state cryo revenue at maturity is roughly £112k / year — 40 bolt-on members (£72k) + 15 standalone (£32k) + ~200 drop-in sessions (£8k). Variable contribution before chamber fixed opex is ~£65k at 58% blended margin.
